A Busy Friday Morning

May 21, 2019

The amount of activity in the Nature Park and Horse Barn Valley on Friday morning proves that a cloudy, drizzly day doesn't deter KNPS volunteers.

Frank, Paul and Lou took a truck into the Park from the Swan Ave. entrance and spent the morning cleaning up old junk that was revealed last fall when the fuel treatment crews thinned out the small trees near the old gravel pit. Previously screened from view were piles of metal, old bottles, a couple of rusted 45-gallon barrels, a bunch of tires and even a snowplow blade off a pickup truck. They bagged, dragged and hoisted all the junk into a pickup truck and packed it away to the transfer station for recycling or disposal.

At the same time John, Kent and Chris headed up to Horse Barn Valley, where Chris spent hours chainsawing deadfall from Summer Trail and Tora Bora Trail while John and Kent packed in and installed three new kiosk map panels. The kiosk at the bottom of Bullfrog Hill was refreshed with the installation of a large map of Horse Barn Valley, and the new three-sided kiosk in the HBV parking area received a smaller version of that map, a Nature Park map, and a map showing the entire Round the Mountain route. The design of the new maps was a group effort spearhead by Lisa Cox at Recreation Sites and Trails BC, who also funded their production. Many thanks to Lisa for all her support with the management of Horse Barn Valley.

Paul sorts and bags debris in the recently thinned area along the Lower Army Road.
